Volcom’s VQS Pufferfish Surf Series – Lahaina Harbor, Maui

The 2011/2012 Totally Crustaceous Tour kicked off this weekend at Lahaina Harbor on the beautiful island of Maui. With glassy conditions all day and the waves a fun 2-4 feet it was great way to start the season. After signing up nearly 160 competitors, we got the party started early with the first heat hitting the water at 6:45am! The level of surfing in all divisions was at an all time high and there was no shortage of jaw dropping maneuvers resulting in high scores from the judges. Dylan Lehman surfed all the way to a solid third place in the Groms Division and earned a heap of goodies including a pair of insane KICKER headphones.

There were 42 Squids, the most ever at a VQS event and each one got a lift out to the lineup courtesy of our jet ski assist!

Wesley Larson was surfing like a crazy person all day on his way to $500.00 and First Place.

The crowd was excited especially with smiley faces, with people attached to them flying through the air!

Zeke Lau made quick work of the competition in the Juniors final and earned himself $250 courtesy of MUSCLE MILK.

These are the most talented bunch of Squids I had ever seen, Marco Rista took first and earned a spot into the 2012 VQS Champs!

The Pro-Am division had tons of talent from all over the beautiful Hawaiian Islands.

The crowd swarmed the stage to get a view of the winners from all divisions and watch local band Nectar Collector perform.

Kayla McCarthy was a standout in the Squids early rounds and won herself a surfboard from shaper Aaron Coon for her efforts. Meanwhile, Kevin Sullivan took the ELECTRIC VISUAL move of the event and $100 cash!
