Viagra Boys: Vans Sidestripe Sessions
Salad Days

This session features music by Swedish post-punk band Viagra Boys. Viagra Boys performed two songs, ‘Toad’ and ‘Girls & Boys’ from the album Welfare Jazz, accompanied by art created by Luke McGarry.

Viagra Boyz formed in 2015 in Stockholm, Sweden. After the release of two EPs released their debut full-length album in 2018. Leading with the release of the tracks ‘Sports’ and ‘Just Like You’ Street Worm showcased their daring and obtrusive post-punk. The album confronted misogyny and systemic issues. Their latest album, ‘Welfare Jazz’, tackles self-examination and addiction. In an announcement for the album in late 2020, frontman Sebastian Murphy shared a personal message to give the album context. Murphy revealed, “We wrote these songs at a time when I had been in a long-term relationship, taking drugs every day, and being an a**hole. I didn’t really realise what an a**hole I was until it was too late, and a lot of the record has to do with coming to terms with the fact that I’d set the wrong goals for myself.” Viagra Boys announced big touring plans for 2021/2022 and festival dates, including Barcelona’s Primavera Sound.

Art in this episode comes from Luke McGarry an animator, designer, illustrator, and cartoonist from Manchester, UK. Now based in Los Angeles, McGarry has worked with American brands like Playboy, MAD, Lyft, and many more. He created a successful comic, ‘Lukey McGarry’s TLDR,’ and was honored by the National Cartoonist Society.
