Monster teammate Curren Caples and Flip Skateboards win 2nd place.

Long Beach, California – July 2016 – Monster Energy congratulates team rider Trey Wood for winning first place today with the Blind Skateboards team in the Skateboard Team Challenge at Dew Tour Long Beach 2016. In front of a capacity crowd at the Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center, Trey Wood and teammates TJ Rogers, Micky Papa, and Cody McEntire emerged as the best four-person team out of 36 of the world’s best skateboarders. Trey’s Monster Energy teammate Curren Caples earned a strong 2nd place finish with his Flip Skateboards teammates Alec Majerus, Louie Lopez, and Luan Oliveira.

Premiered in Long Beach today as a brand-new contest format, the Team Challenge presented by TransWorld Skateboarding saw nine board company teams – each composed of four skaters – compete for the highest overall score. The teams collected points by assigning one team member as a specialist to one of four sections representing different aspects of skateboarding: Tech, Bowl, Rails, and Gaps. Individual scores were added into team scores to decide the winner.

As the specialist for the Bowl section, 15-year-old Monster rider Trey Wood earned his team crucial points in the blazing Southern California heat. Covering the entire concrete bowl with speed and maximum air time, Wood’s standout moves included frontside kickflip stalefish, alley oop frontside 5-0 grind, frontside boneless, huge frontside nosebone air, body jar, and high-flying backside 540 after the buzzer for a 93.00 point score; the second-highest in today’s Bowl event. Wood’s score set Blind Skateboards on the road to victory, while his teammate TJ Rogers took the top spot in the Tech section, Micky Papa boosted the team’s lead in the Rails zone, and Cody McEntire sealed the deal in the Gaps competition for a total score of 369.32 points.

Charging into second place, Caples and the Flip Skateboards team cleared 359.66 points with a versatile performance. A major push came from Caples putting up the day’s highest score as the specialist for the Bowl section with his signature fluid style and difficult technical moves. The 20-year-old from Ventura, California, secured 93.33 points with standout moves including backside crossbone and lien airs on the extension, frontside nosegrind over the channel rail, a technical kickflip to frontside 5-0 and frontside blunt on the tall bank, and backside tailslide and backside Smith grind across the pool wall. Caples also made a strong showing in yesterday’s individual pro skate event, finishing 3rd in the Bowl section with 88.33 points.

Closely missing the podium, Monster Energy’s Nyjah Huston found leapfrogged in the final heat by Plan B Skateboards taking 3rd place with 358.99 points – one single point. As the specialist for the Rails section, Huston unloaded a repertoire of technical moves onto the course: backside smith grind, frontside nose grind to pop over, and frontside 5-0 the entire flat rail, and switch frontside smith grind, kickflip frontside boardslide, switch frontside lipslide, and backside 180 to backward nosegrind on the 9-stair rail, plus a switch frontside noseblunt slide earned the 21-year-old from San Juan Capistrano, California, the second-highest score in the Rails section with 93.33 points.
