Max Parrot (Can) and Enni Rukajärvi (Fin) are the Air + Style Festival Innsbruck-Tyrol 2017 champions
Next-level snowboarding and music seal the deal on a truly classic year for the iconic Big Air contest in Europe’s snowboarding capital city.
The European leg of the Air + Style Festival world tour delivered an unforgettable evening for Innsbruck’s passionate audience tonight, as snowboarding’s elite Big Air stars threw down alongside stellar performances from rockers Biffy Clyro and Beginner. 2017 will be remembered as the year the world’s best female snowboarders joined the men in Innsbruck, and put on a show that reflects the next-level progression the sport is undergoing. After challenging conditions in the semi finals earlier in the day, Austrian favourite Anna Gasser was unable to show her potential, missing the final cut of four for the final. The wind dropped for the final showdown and all four ladies threw down an array of progressive moves – Britain’s Katie Ormerod’s Cab 900 earned her a well deserved 2nd place but Finnish ripper Enni’s Cab 720 and Backside 720 Indy’s were the biggest and cleanest of the night, and she leaves Innsbruck with the proud honour of being the first female Air + Style champion. Swiss Slopestyle legend Sina Candrian placed third.
Max Parrot arrived in Innsbruck fresh from X Games Gold in Aspen last week, keen to replicate his victory at the Air + Style Beijing 2015 and extend his Air + Style World Tour lead: he wasn’t disappointed. The ultra-consistent Canadian locked in a huge and clean Backside Triple Cork 1440 Mute on his first run to edge slightly ahead of talented Norwegian rival Marcus Kleveland (NOR). After stomping an equally huge Cab Triple Cork 1620 Indy on his 2nd run, Max had a solid lead that neither Marcus nor third place finisher Sven Thorgren (SWE) could quite catch up to. A special mention has to go out to Sven for what was probably the most creative and stylish riding of the night – his Cab 12 Roast Beef Shifty-Shifty was pure insanity.
All in all, a landmark event for the iconic Air + Style series, and a fantastic night for men’s and women’s snowboarding. Next stop of the Air + Style World Tour is Los Angeles on February 18th – 19th. Tune in!
