An all-star cast of skaters and snowboarders kick off the festival in style…

The Air + Style Festival Innsbruck-Tyrol stepped into gear today as an A-list cast of international freestyle snowboarders battled for 16 coveted spots in tomorrows main event. With 30 athletes from 12 nations taking part in tonight’s qualifiers, the action came thick and fast on the 42-meter-high ramp at Innsbruck’s Olympiaworld stadium. 2015 LA Air And Style winner Yuki Kadono stomped a huge and perfect backside triple cork 1620 Mute to qualify in first place, closely followed by Sweden’s Sven Thorgren in second, while last year’s winner Sebastian Toutant (CAN), got third. Meanwhile, Swiss rider Jonas Boesiger emerged as one to watch tomorrow, after placing fourth in his first Air & Style contest.

Danny Leon wins the skateboard bowl contest

The week’s action kicked off on Wednesday and Thursday with the welcome return of the Air + Style Bowl contest down at Innsbruck’s Skate Hall. After an incredible street Best Trick contest on Wednesday, Thursday saw some of Europe’s finest transition skaters battle it out in the challenging wooden bowl. Last year’s winner Alex Hallford returned to defend his title with his usual blend of big airs and bigger style, but it wasn’t enough to prevent 22 year-old Spanish talent Danny Leon from dominating with a breathtaking display of technical difficulty combined with effortless amplitude. The stoked Madrid skater clearly loved the atmosphere and the jam format, saying “We had a lot of time to show our sickest tricks: that takes off the pressure and gives you extra motivation to push your limits.”
