STREAMS – FEED ME’S ESCAPE FROM ELECTRIC MOUNTAIN (MAU5TRAP)

STREAMS – FEED ME’S ESCAPE FROM ELECTRIC MOUNTAIN (MAU5TRAP)

Feed Me makes his return to mau5trap with his most encompassing work yet. The six-track ‘Escape From Electric Mountain’ EP sees him teaming up with Hadouken!, Lindsay and Gemini as he comes primed with an explosive and varied arsenal of material for the dance floor. Opening track ‘Trapdoor’ featuring Hadouken!, which first aired on a tidal swell of support towards the end of last year, kicks off the EP in huge fashion. Showcasing Feed Me’s indefinable take on bass led electronic music ‘Trapdoor’ builds on a wave of astral synths that raise up the vocals before unleashing its full force with a maniacal, mechanised baseline that writhes through the core of the track, wiring itself around the soft synths and vocal hooks. This is followed by ‘Relocation’, a complete switch up in sound that demonstrates the depth and musicality at Feed Me’s fingertips. As layers of tumbling, ambient synth tones wind around each other to create the spine of the track, building over the course of two mins, they fade into the distance as the track kicks back in with a 4×4 shuffle, stripped back melodies and a bumping bass line. Feed Me even gives a subtle nod back to his first EP by winding glimpses of fan favourite ‘Blood Red’ in to the track. ‘One Click Headshot’ reveals yet another string to his bow. Built around a digital, funk-fuelled bounce, the manic vocal sample then gives away to venomous, rapidfire bass licks. Up next ‘Embers’, featuring the sumptuous vocals of Lindsay, is a schizophrenic balance of all of the above. Delicate piano melodies combined with a featherweight vocal elevate this track to a great height, before introducing a gnarly 4×4 stomp that brings it crashing back down to earth. Progressive and relentless roller ‘Trichitillomania’ shows off the sleazy and darker shades of this pioneering sound with the distorted wobble and glitchy synths ensuring maximum impact. Feed Me’s collaboration with rising star Gemini, ‘Whiskers’, rounds off the EP on powerful form. A jittery and melodic opening builds tension superbly before bringing in a chaotic drop. This full-bodied banger blends catchy synth hooks with a heavyweight bass line that will be guaranteed to cause bedlam, a sentiment shared by Zane Lowe who picked it as his ‘Hottest Record In The World’ this week. With the release of his latest EP and a lengthy tour of the US to follow in March and April, things look set to get busier yet this year. Showcasing the versatility of his production, this EP is the perfect calling card from a producer whose star is undoubtedly in the ascendant.
