Leeds punks Sunliner revisit track, ‘Special Place In Hell’, and announce European Tour
In 2022, between recording sessions of their debut, self titled LP, Sunliner got the opportunity to head down to the coast and record a few songs at Frank Turner’s home studio…
…so, mid-way in writing an album, they put that work aside and wrote 2 new songs. ‘Special Place In Hell’ was the first that came out, frantic and angry it is the ultimate anti-tory, anti-snowflake-phrase-user anthem. Frank’s production approach shines through, enhancing the songwriting and instrumentation, with moments as simple singer Jake’s using his childhood acoustic guitar subtly in the background or the energy and push in the songs. Recorded in just only 2 days, the production captures that tight-nit group, a band who have lived in each others pockets, who know what the other is about to do, just by the feel of their playing. As a live favourite, song has been given another chance to be heard with a remix from album producer Andy Hawkins, to fit in with later bonus edition represses of the album and mastered by Dave Draper. Not only are the band reissuing this track, they’ll also be making their way across Belgium, Austria, The Netherlands and Germany to place some shows in early November. In 2024 they headed to Canada to play Toronto’s Pouzza fest and started working on album 2. With studio time booked in for their second album, Sunliner show no signs of slowing down.
Born out of the ashes of previous band Jake & The Jellyfish, they are a punk rock band, but first and foremost, they’re friends. Being in a small DIY band involves hours upon hours in sweaty, air-conditioned-less-vans, monitor-free gigs and nights sleeping on floors of squats – if you’re not friends, that would seem terrible, but when you are, it’s incredible. That camaraderie is at the heart of band’s gruff, springsteen-punk tunes. Taking influence from early days Against Me! and Hot Water Music, seamlessly weave in the emotional tug of Frightened Rabbit and the storytelling cultural commentary of Bruce Springsteen. All this paired with a live show overflowing with energy and a chemistry that is palpable. Group isn’t short of songs; in 2022 they released their acclaimed, self-titled, debut album, recorded in 2 chunks at The Nave by producer Andy Hawkins, in between recording sessions they went down to Frank Turner’s home studio and spent a weekend hanging out and recording 2 new songs with Frank behind the producer wheel. In 2023 they recorded single ‘First Against The Wall’ ahead of their trip to the US to play Florida’s famous The Fest, a song that has grown legs and struck a chord with listeners.
